Small business is a seedbed of creative ideas enhanced with an entrepreneurial and resilient spirit. Why not give them a little nurturing and help the UK small businesses sector flourish. Websites like Small Business Saturday UK and Save the High Street are doing their bit to give a collective digital voice but we could do our bit too by supporting and using our local businesses.
“SMEs are not only a highly important aspect of the UK economy, representing more than 49% of all economic activity, but have also outperformed the enterprise sector over the past five years, recording growth of 21% while enterprise growth has been restricted to just 8%.”
– Terry Leggett, Senior Industrial Analyst
A 2017 Mintel.com report found that UK small business provides more than 49% of all economic activity. All this despite the global rise of Amazon. This is encouraging news for small business in the UK.
Why should we shop locally?
When you support a local business you:
get a more personal level of service, as well as helping to make your community a more vibrant place to live.
Small business owners are connected to their businesses in a very personal way. Therefore the service you get is highly personal. When you buy local products and services you make a special connection.
Local businesses add a unique flavour to the community. By supporting local you help preserve those unique qualities that make your community interesting.
Our business premises on Salters Road Gosforth have been part of the Gosforth community since 1915. At this time the Wards Directory records that a Mrs, Russell traded as a general dealer from 147 Salters Road and a Mrs, Paris traded as a Butcher from 149 Salters Road. The directory goes on to record more butchers, tobacconists, and boot repair businesses trading form these premises. During 1920’s A E Kelly Newsagent moved in, heralding the local name for the area Kelly’s Corner. Kelly’s Newsagent traded on the site for over 18 years, followed by T Potts and T Punshon Newsagents, Harrisons Newsagents and eventually Connection Express our delivery company.
Connection Express has recently moved to 145, Salters Road. This move allowed two new local businesses to open on the Kelly’s Corner site.

“We love being part of the Gosforth community. As a small family run business it’s important to us to support the community and the businesses within it. We’d been looking to find some photos of the shop through the years, but we haven’t found any. If any local people have any that they’d like to share with us that would be lovely.”
